She then set up a passcode system specific to the patient to ensure that only visitors allowed were ones he had specifically granted access to by providing the code.
I'm a nursing student at Oklahoma City Community College and was assigned to the OKC VA Medical Center for my clinicals this semester. Ginger was one of the nurses I was assigned to, and I found myself extremely impressed by both her clinical skills and the focus as my trainer she put into developing my own skills and education. She didn't know this, but I'm also a veteran and occasional patient at that facility, so my time spent in clinicals there was not just about learning how to be a nurse, but gauging the quality of the staff and the care they provide, as I never know when I might be their next patient. I’m pleased to say that I have no complaints across the board at the VA, but Ginger did something that stood out as above-and-beyond: while caring for one of our patients, a visitor entered the room and introduced herself as the patient's sister, which seemed benign to me, but Ginger immediately went on guard, as it turned out the name given by that visitor was one Ginger had already been given the day prior by someone else also claiming to be the sister. Ginger turned to the patient for clarification on whether he was okay with that visitor being present for his care and confirmed her identity as his sister. She then set up a passcode system specific to the patient to ensure that only visitors allowed were ones he had specifically granted access to by providing the code. She also questioned the sister to determine who it was that 'borrowed' her identity the day prior, and why. The imposter turned out to be harmless: it was a friend of the patient's family with a history of acting as a prankster. Still, Ginger took no chances when it came to her patient's privacy and security. She recognized the situation as odd and without hesitation implemented fail safes to protect the patient from anyone whose presence wasn't welcome; and she launched her own investigation right there in the patient's room to get to the bottom of the situation. Again, as a VA patient myself, Ginger's actions not only showed that I would be in great hands under her care from a clinical perspective, but that I could feel secure as well! Upon leaving that patient's room, I also heard the sister say to the patient "You got such a good nurse!" so I know Ginger made a great impact on the patient and his family. Thank you so much, Ginger! You are an inspiration to the quality of nurse I hope to become!
