I am writing this nomination to recognize Gina Klein for her extraordinary performance during a high-acuity, life-threatening event in our PICU. On a shift involving a 20-month-old in fulminant myocarditis and respiratory failure, Gina demonstrated a level of clinical excellence and composure that far surpassed her years of experience.
Despite the chaotic and critical nature of the patient’s deterioration and subsequent cardiac arrest, Gina remained outwardly calm and incredibly focused. She communicated with remarkable efficiency, ensuring the team remained on track during multiple rounds of CPR and complex vasoactive titrations. Her ability to maintain a steady presence in such a high-stakes environment was a cornerstone of our stabilization efforts.
When the transport team arrived, and the patient required eCPR to move toward ECMO cannulation, Gina did not hesitate. She jumped into action, accompanying the patient and me in the ambulance to provide continuous, high-quality care during transport. Her unwavering clinical fortitude and proactive nature were invaluable; quite simply, the patient’s chance at survival was secured because of her presence and dedication.
Gina’s exceptional clinical competence—matched by the incredible effort of the entire St. John staff—highlights the strength and capability of our team. Knowing the caliber of care Gina provides, I would not hesitate to bring my own child to this facility, confident they would receive the best "fighting chance" possible. Gina fought tirelessly for this baby’s life, and because of her, he has that chance.
