Gianna's attentive care and expert support helped my mother safely transition off the CPAP machine and transfer to the hospital floor within 12 hours.
I am honored to nominate Gianna Biggerstaff for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and skillful care during one of the most challenging nights of my mother’s hospitalization. My mother suffers from advanced dementia and faces significant language and cultural barriers. During her stay in the ICU, she was placed on a CPAP machine for the first time—an experience that was not only medically complex but emotionally overwhelming for her. Her dementia made her disoriented and frightened, and her behavior reflected the distress she was feeling. As her daughter and a nurse with 28 years of experience, I’ve seen all kinds of care—but what I witnessed from Gianna that night was nothing short of exceptional. Despite the many challenges-my mother's unpredictable behavior, the language barrier, cultural differences, and the emotional weight we were all carrying-Gianna never once wavered in her calm, patient, and compassionate care. She did not complain or show frustration. Instead, she worked with quiet strength and empathy, reassuring us with her presence and handling every moment with professionalism and grace. Gianna's attentive care and expert support helped my mother safely transition off the CPAP machine and transfer to the hospital floor within 12 hours. This progress, under such emotionally and medically difficult circumstances, was due in part to Gianna's dedicated and sensitive care. She made us feel supported and safe in a moment filled with fear and confusion. Her ability to maintain dignity, offer emotional reassurance, and provide expert clinical care in such a complex situation speaks volumes about her character and capability as a nurse. For her compassionate spirit, cultural sensitivity, and exceptional nursing skill, I wholeheartedly nominate Gianna Biggerstaff for the DAISY Award. She is exactly the kind of nurse every family hopes for in a time of crisis, and we will always remember the difference she made for us.
