“Colonoscopy” – not exactly tops on the list of ‘cool things to do for my 50th birthday’. GI is a department no one really wants to think about – the least glamorous department in the hospital. It is invasive & unpleasant--but a necessary evil of adulthood. Their staff knows this & are INCREDIBLY KIND, CARING & PROFESSIONAL. They do an AMAZING JOB of making fearful procedures a comfortable, stress-free experience, in addition to providing lifesaving cancer screenings & prevention. Often doing 30 procedures a day with a small staff, they run at a hectic pace. Teamwork is of the essence. The nurses, CRNAs, techs, and physicians are a compassionate, finely tuned machine, very deserving of the DAISY Team Award.

On arrival, you’re greeted warmly by your nurse, taken to a private suite, swaddled in comforting warm blankets. A third warm blanket wrapped around your arm dilates dehydrated veins, making the IV start quickly and painlessly. They do the utmost to ensure privacy, holding your gown and curtains, they are soooo respectful. Nurses & anesthesia do a very thorough interview & medical history, ensuring patient safety, providing further reassurance. Their active listening skills are tops, as they truly understand one’s anxiety & fears, doing everything they can to allay this, compassionately listening, doing all the right things. After purging and starving yourself for 24 hours, a little TLC is a wonderful thing!

Once in the procedure room, where things ‘get real’ & anxiety peaks, a fresh warm blanket, kind words, a comforting hand on your shoulder … as good drugs drift you off to a blissful sleep. Next thing you know, you’re awake in recovery, totally relaxed, no pain, or memory of the procedure, thinking, “Wow, that was the best sleep in a LONG time.” Your nurse offers you a much-welcomed cold one -- water that is. Your feared procedure is behind you. Rather than waiting nervously for a phone call, your doctor reassuringly talks to you immediately afterwards, explaining results, complete with pictures & recommendations for follow-up.

Everything is done at the highest skill level, without pain or memory of the actual procedure, unlike satellite clinics; I’ve heard -- and sadly experienced -- the horror stories. From the techs who clean & sterilize scopes that have been—well, you know where— ensuring patient safety, to the nurses, CRNAs, physicians: all do their jobs superbly. Their leadership sets a high standard, leading by example professionally & compassionately, and it shows.

They are just a super kind, good bunch of folks dedicated to what they do. Despite a ridiculously high volume & fast pace, every person is treated as if they’re the only patient that day. They provide a vital service in cancer detection and prevention with the highest level of comfort, kindness, and professionalism. For the service they provide, for their skill, compassion, and teamwork, the Avista GI Team – Nurses, Physicians, CRNAs, and techs -- are very deserving of the DAISY Team Award.
