Most nurse educators take years to master their craft, but Genesis Garcia was born with gifts to seamlessly develop others by giving them the tools they need to succeed. As a cutting-edge innovator, Genesis motivates our nurse residents by integrating learning and fun as synonymous concepts. Homemade JDCH escape rooms, wellness minutes, clinical reflections, and scenario-based learning fill her classrooms, creating a special bond with every cohort. Genesis creates learning opportunities from topics that may seem lackluster on the surface, and she makes them fun.

When she introduces Solutions for Patient Safety and bundle elements for Hospital-Acquired Conditions, for example, the nurse residents create TikTok videos to present SPS to their group. As coordinator for the JDCH Nurse Residency Program, Genesis creates an environment from day one where all are encouraged to ask questions, speak up with a questioning heart, and pay it forward to build a more cohesive children's hospital in the future. Everything she contributes as a nurse educator builds safety and quality for our patients and families, professional development and retention for our novice staff, and a culture of innovations in professional nursing practice. Genesis Garcia is the professional development coordinator in the Center for Nursing Excellence, Education and Innovation.

Prior to this role, she held a position as clinical nurse educator for our three inpatient units. As the professional development coordinator, she manages three to four cohorts of 10 - 30 nurse residents every year. Genesis welcomes these nurse residents on day one and remains their guide, mentor, resource, confidant, and coach until graduation one year later. Although Educator is not in the Genesis' official title, she certainly fills this role for our nurse residents by teaching many of their education sessions. Genesis partners with our professional development and education council in programs such as the mentor program and preceptor program. The CNE office is often a collaborative space where Genesis assists and mentors new clinical nurse educators. Simulation coordinator is another educational role that Genesis fills. She coordinates all the activities in the 8th-floor simulation lab. She ensures that the sim lab is organized and well-stocked with all the activities needed for learning.

Through continued education and various conferences, she is always looking for ways to improve upon her simulation experience. She also recently presented at a simulation consortium. Genesis’s education style is filled with fun interactive games, hands-on activities, escape rooms, and, of course, simulation. She recently brought forth a fun “Birds of a Feather” activity that she learned about from the 2024 Magnet® Conference. Many of our leaders and educators had fun taking this assessment to learn if they were an owl, a peacock, a dove, or an eagle. Genesis is responsible for supporting the AHA Heartcode Program here at Joe DiMaggio. In this role, she coordinates all the instructors and classes, manages and troubleshoots the equipment, serves as back-up whenever an instructor is not available, and ensures the program runs smoothly.

Genesis is one of the few Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPST) at Joe DiMaggio and is often called to assist with obtaining specialized car seats for patients. She co-facilitates new employee orientation each month, welcoming and engaging all new Joe DiMaggio employees with her unique personality. Not to mention, she doubles as audiovisual technical support whenever the need arises. As you can see, Genesis’s impact on the nursing culture at Joe DiMaggio is far-reaching. She exemplifies the nursing Professional Practice Model in so many ways. Through her residency and simulation work, she promotes professional development and elevates clinical practice. Through collaboration and communication, she facilitates the residency program, manages the simulation lab, and coordinates Heartcode activities. Her work as a CPST impacts our patients, families, and the community of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Genesis is the ultimate team player. If you need a pinch hitter in any situation, you can count on Genesis.
