Gene recognized that the patient had signs of sepsis on exam, repeated his vitals, and initiated interventions which included fluid resuscitation.
A few weeks ago, I was on call over the weekend working with Gene. Gene called me after evaluating a patient due to concern about abdominal pain. He stayed with the patient after my initial evaluation and noticed that this clinical status was evolving, hemodynamically changing. Gene recognized that the patient had signs of sepsis on exam, repeated his vitals, and initiated interventions which included fluid resuscitation. Soon after, we called a rapid response for sepsis, and concern that the patient had an acute abdomen and needed surgical intervention.

His care, attention to the patient, and understanding that his clinical status was evolving helped save the patient from poor patient outcomes. We initiated antibiotics, and the patient went to the OR for emergency abdominal surgery. Gene's commitment to the patient's care was a key driver in our process. Prior to going to the OR, the patient asked Gene if he was returning to the orthopedic floor because he felt safe having Gene as his nurse and being in his care. For the last 5.5 years, whenever Gene is caring for my patients, I know the quality of care will be superior and their needs will be met. Gene saved this patient's life. It is truly an honor working with him.
