My chances of surviving were slim, yet my family and friends continually spoke about Gabriel and the incredible care he provided.
While I was unconscious for two weeks at the Gulf Coast ICU, I never had the chance to meet Gabriel. I then spent another three weeks unconscious at Select Specialty Hospital. So why would I nominate someone I don’t remember meeting? Because of what I’ve been told. Most of my visitors during that time were Iraq War veterans—friends who know trauma care well. Two of them have endured more than 80 surgeries between them, so they understand what exceptional care looks like. My chances of surviving were slim, yet my family and friends continually spoke about Gabriel and the incredible care he provided. I was unconscious for a little over a month and was released a week after that to continue recovering at home. My parents and my fellow veterans are all convinced that Gabriel played a major role in helping me beat the odds. My 82-year-old mother even said that Gabriel was the best nurse she had ever seen at work. For these reasons, I proudly nominate Gabriel for the DAISY Award—a man I never met but who had a profound impact on saving my life.
