Gabriel was empathetic and sensitive with our families, introducing the following steps for home.
Gabriel initially approached us when my mother's condition was deteriorating. He is a very knowledgeable and caring professional who explained to us, the family, all the different options and steps to be considered for the comfort care program. He went over and beyond the duties of his job by answering the many questions we needed answering. He did not rush and demonstrated amazing levels of patience. He also has a great sense of humor, which helps people get through difficult times in their lives.
We will be eternally grateful for all his help and knowledge in this difficult stage of our lives.

I wanted to share a heartfelt appreciation for Gabriel's exceptional support to our NICU team and families during some very challenging times. The NICU does not often have terminal patients. In the last two years, we have had 2 that Gabriel has helped care for. He has been an excellent support to the nurses and the families staying very late in our unit. He is caring and thoughtful, always going out of his way to provide excellent care during a difficult time.
During this time, we had hospice patients sent back from CHLA to be near their families during this difficult time of terminal extubations. These patients all went home after extubation. Gabriel was so kind, supportive, and willing to help us. Gabriel happened to be on call for the palliative care team and even stayed late, waiting for the parents and family to arrive as they transitioned into our department. He kept in contact with them throughout their stay and assisted with setting up help and care at home. Gabriel was empathetic and sensitive with our families, introducing the following steps for home. Our NICU staff, physicians, and families appreciate the help with coordinating services we are not accustomed to dealing with.

I met Gabriel Guillen after my father was admitted to St. John's Medical Center in Oxnard. Gabriel is a palliative care nurse. Gabriel called to discuss options concerning my father's care. He was very informative. It was a difficult time as my dad was very sick. During this time, he helped guide me to make difficult decisions. Gabriel made this process easier as he explained the different treatment options depending on my father's condition. He was always available, and I called him often with questions. Even though he was busy, he spent as much time as I needed to address my concerns. I kept telling Gabriel that St. John's was lucky to have him. He was a blessing to work with. I was impressed by his professionalism and empathy. I was glad to have Gabriel by my side during this dark time. He eased my emotional pain and suffering. Gabriel showed concern and compassion towards my family. He would check to see how my father was doing and make sure my father was comfortable. He also served as a liaison with the physicians. He would listen to my concerns. He would answer my questions. I could tell Gabriel was experienced at his job. Unfortunately, my father's condition worsened after a procedure. He was admitted to the CCU.
We will be eternally grateful for all his help and knowledge in this difficult stage of our lives.

Gabriel even called to make sure I was aware of my father's condition. My father passed away shortly after. I appreciated Gabriel's support. I will never forget the kindness he showed towards my family. Gabriel exemplifies the core values of nursing. A quote, "Nurses dispense comfort, compassion and caring without even a prescription." So, on behalf of my family, I would like to nominate Gabriel Guillen for the DAISY Award for his exceptional work.
