Fritzie Barcenas, BSN, RN
I am nominating Fritzie Barcenas for the DAISY Award because of the extraordinary compassion and skill she showed while caring for my dad. From the moment she walked into the room and introduced herself, she created a safe space, and she genuinely cared for my dad and my family.
She always took the time to explain every step, listened to our concerns without rushing, and anticipated my dad’s needs. The patient has a Granddaughter who is a Nurse Practitioner; she had many questions about my dad’s care plan. Fritzie took the time to answer all the questions thoroughly and completely. She consistently used her critical thinking skills to avoid potential setbacks.
What stood out most was her ability to blend clinical expertise with human kindness.
My family was overwhelmed and scared, but Fritzie took the time to sit with us, reassured us, and treated us like we were part of her family. She has a calming presence which helped eliminate the uncertainty of it all.
One moment that stood out to me was around 9:00 p.m. She came into the room and gave my dad a warm bath in his bed. After the warm bath, she took the time to put lotion on my dad’s legs and feet. This act of kindness still brings tears to my eyes. It was so important to her that my dad be comfortable. This meant so much to my family and me.
During his final hours, Fritzie continued to provide kind and compassionate care. I will never forget that compassion and the comfort Fritzie provided during one of the darkest hours I have experienced. Nurses like her are rare; she embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. Her excellence reflects the highest standards of nursing; she truly deserves this honor.
