Frankie is the true definition of what it means to be a nurse with both skill and heart. Recently, Frankie cared for a patient who was experiencing withdrawal and facing significant stigma due to her condition and attitude. While many might have kept their distance, Frankie leaned in with compassion. She consistently treated this patient with dignity, humanity, and respect, never allowing judgment to cloud the care provided. Frankie went far beyond normal responsibilities to make a lasting impact. She arranged to take the patient to the NICU to see her newborn baby – something the patient had longed for. When the patient expressed that she wanted to hold her baby, Frankie advocated for her, coordinated with the NICU nurses, and even offered to stay after shift so this mother could experience that first precious moment. Understanding how important it was for the patient to feel her best during such a milestone, Frankie personally purchased pajamas and a sports bra out of her own pocket, so the patient would not have to take her first photos with her baby in a hospital gown. Frankie helped fix the patient’s hair and made sure she felt like a proud mother ready to meet her newborn. Both the day and night shift NICU nurses were touched by Frankie’s advocacy, and one even stayed late to be present when the patient finally got to hold her baby. The room was filled with emotion, with not a dry eye present. What could have been just another shift turned into a life-changing experience for a mother and her child – because Frankie refused to let this patient feel less worthy. Her actions not only improved her patient’s physical and emotional healing but also reignited a sense of hope and humanity for everyone who witnessed the moment. Frankie exemplifies the core of nursing: compassion, advocacy, and treating every patient as a whole human being, no matter what their circumstances.
