Flor Harris Aton Ward cared for my mom, who was transferred to TCU from ED due to a lack of rooms, until we could make the arrangements for her Hospice Care.

Flor was AMAZING!!! I have never seen someone so attentive and caring to their patient.

My mom had metastatic brain cancer and could not communicate well, yet every time Flor came in the room, she was sure to speak directly to my mom and let her know every step of what she was doing as she checked vitals, gave meds, etc.

She even requested my mom’s room specifically the following day to assure she could continue to care for her until she went home.

Flor was my nurse for the majority of my time in the hospital, and her impact on my healing both physically and emotionally was profound.

Even while I was ventilated and unable to communicate in typical ways, Flor made it a priority to recognize my concerns, comfort, and dignity. She paid close attention to nonverbal cues, anticipated my needs, and ensured I felt safe and supported during an extremely vulnerable time.

Despite the barriers, she never treated me as invisible or passive; she treated me as a whole person whose voice still mattered.

Flor consistently demonstrated patience, empathy, and respect. She took the time to explain what was happening, reassured me through her presence, and created an environment where fear was replaced with trust.

Her care played a significant role in my healing and recovery.

She also formed a meaningful connection with my family, offering them the same compassion, communication, and reassurance she gave me. Knowing that my loved ones were supported by her made an overwhelming situation more manageable for all of us.

What truly sets Flor apart is that she never treated me as a diagnosis or an MRN. She saw me as a person first, even when I could not speak for myself.

That level of advocacy and humanity is rare and reflects the very heart of nursing.

Flor embodies everything the DAISY Award represents. I genuinely hope she receives this recognition, as she is an exceptional nurse who makes a lasting difference in the lives of her patients and their families.
