It is with great pleasure that I nominate an extraordinary group of nurses from the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society - First Year Focus Nurse Team for the DAISY Team Award.

Under the leadership of Visiting Nurse Abby Porter, this team has demonstrated exceptional dedication and innovation in the creation and launch of the First Year Focus program—an initiative designed to support expectant and new mothers within our Navy and Marine Corps families.

This program was envisioned and brought to life by a team of highly skilled and compassionate nurses:

Abby Porter, Susan McKelvey, Jessica Harrington, Lindsey Potts-Szoke, Molly Curtis, Shannon Williams, and April Pearson.

Together, they worked tirelessly, meeting regularly, researching, and designing a program aimed at improving health education and resource connection during pregnancy and throughout the critical first year after birth.

Their commitment didn’t stop at planning. They actively piloted the program themselves, ensuring that it was not only practical but also deeply supportive and effective for the families they serve.

The First Year Focus program begins engaging expectant mothers at 20 weeks of pregnancy and offers a personalized support system that continues through early parenthood. The team used evidence-based curriculum, combining education with one-on-one nursing support, empowering these mothers with knowledge and confidence as they navigate this pivotal time in their lives.

Importantly, the program was designed with flexibility—tailored to meet the unique needs of military families.

Since its launch, the pilot program has received significant attention, shining the spotlight on the vital importance of maternal mental health.

The work of this team is not only improving lives today, but it is laying a foundation for long-lasting, meaningful support for Navy and Marine Corps families.

So today, with deep gratitude and admiration, I nominate Abby, Susan, Jessica, Lindsey, Molly, Shannon, and April for their incredible compassion, innovation, and dedication. You embody the very best of nursing, and your impact will be felt for years to come.
