The Fetal Medicine team provides care for women and their families during times of extreme stress. Women often receive distressing diagnoses for their babies and are supported throughout their pregnancy by the team.

Every member of the Fetal Medicine team, from the receptionist, HCA, midwifery, and medical staff, offers exemplary care and compassion to all who visit the department. We have received numerous compliments and messages from women who have expressed gratitude for the supportive environment and compassionate staff. Despite facing a challenging and difficult pregnancy, patients have felt alleviated of anxiety, supported in decision-making, and cared for as individuals.

The team all care for each other. In Fetal Medicine, there can be difficult situations that can challenge personal beliefs and also be stressful. As a team we provide both friendship and supportive supervision to each other to support our own personal wellbeing.

In response to capacity challenges, we have implemented innovative new clinics, such as a midwifery sonographer-led advanced Doppler clinic. This approach has allowed patients to be seen by the midwifery sonography team, freeing up appointments for consultants and addressing capacity issues. Our efforts have been recognized as a service improvement in the West Midlands Fetal Medicine Network, and we have shared our experiences with this innovation at regional meetings.

We are also in the process of launching a Rainbow Clinic, which takes a multidisciplinary approach to caring for women and families who have experienced previous pregnancy loss. This clinic will provide continuity of care, enhancing support during what is often a stressful and challenging pregnancy.
