We arrived in the ICU after an abrupt and devastating reality of a severe brain trauma due to a stroke. Fern's beautiful spirit, kindness, warmth, and skilled care were such a gift at that time. We felt at ease the minute she walked in. Her genuine smile and caring heart are so radiant.

As the family got to know her, the first question was: "Is Fern on duty today?" She is right where she is supposed to be - an exceptional nurse!

Fern learned it was the patient's 48th wedding anniversary, and the fact that the patient was placed on hospice care, she went into action to honor the couple's anniversary by arranging a cake and a group of nurses, and made a heartfelt presentation of the cake to the family. The patient's wife was brought to tears by this act of kindness.

Fern's compassion, dedication, and consistent support for patients, families, and co-workers is truly remarkable. WakeMed is truly fortunate to have a nurse like Fern, and I'm grateful to get to work by her side.
