Chase goes above and beyond every day he works.
Chase embodies all the qualities of an exceptional DAISY nurse. Here are just a few examples of why he is truly amazing. In September, we faced an emergency in the OR after hours and on a weekend. A patient was brought in for an urgent C-section. The baby was delivered without complications, but after closing the incision, staff noticed the abdomen was mottled. Upon reexamination by Dr. Hobbs, it was decided to reopen the patient. The abdomen was found to be full of blood, and the patient was actively hemorrhaging.
An emergency hysterectomy was performed, during which the patient required 20 units of various blood products, with an estimated blood loss of almost 5 liters. The patient survived the procedure, was transferred to CMC Main, and subsequently discharged home without any complications. Chase played a crucial role in this patient's survival. He went above and beyond, assisting in the OR, retrieving blood products from the lab, and coordinating transportation with EMS. He stayed in the OR with the patient and the staff until she was on the EMS stretcher. The OR staff believes that without Chase's help, they would not have achieved such a successful outcome.
Another reason Chase is so deserving is because of his advocacy for staff. Several months ago, the OR had an emergency after-hours case during the week. The patient was left intubated after surgery, but the CCU was full. He worked with staff in the CCU and Medical to move patients around, creating a CCU bed for the OR patient. Only one RN is on call for PACU during the week after 8pm. Chase knew they needed help managing a vented patient and that it would not be safe for her to be alone until the regular staff arrived.
He started calling PACU staff and found a nurse to come in early. Chase stayed in PACU with Kari until the additional nurse arrived. Chase goes above and beyond every day he works. Not all of his actions are monumental, but they are all noticed by staff. He is a great house supervisor, teammate, and advocate, and he is truly deserving of this DAISY. Congratulations, Chase, on receiving this special award and thank you for all you do!
