September 2026 Honoree
Erin Maxwell, RN, BSN
I was admitted to Labor and Delivery to have an induction for termination of my pregnancy at 21 weeks and 2 days gestation due to my daughter having partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. This was a wanted pregnancy, and when we got her diagnosis, we were forced to make this impossible decision to deliver her knowing she would not survive.
Erin Maxwell was our Nurse that night. Instantly, she had a way about her to calm both my husband and me. She spoke to us with respect, without judgment, and was clearly very knowledgeable about the process we were about to go through. In a time when we needed stability, Erin was it. She advocated for my birth wishes without my prompting, and kept me informed throughout the entire night of what to expect next. She balanced respecting my privacy with making me feel taken care of and well-monitored with grace. Something as simple as her knocking and announcing, "It's Erin," and awaiting permission to walk into my room made me feel so respected--giving me such comfort every time I knew it was her coming in.
Even in the middle of the night, she sat at my bedside and talked me down when I started to spiral, being the friendly ear that I desperately needed. When my daughter did come, it was calm, controlled, and beautiful even in such a sad situation. I will hold onto that forever, and I know she played a large role in making sure that happened for me. I remember her speaking to my daughter every time she picked her up, calling her "sweet girl," which made me feel as though my daughter still mattered.
Erin's job was not to save my life or my daughter's life that night, but she took the role of caring for us just as seriously, and provided such comfort and strength that I desperately needed but couldn't ask for. She went way beyond what was required of her with everything she did for us. I will think of Erin and that morning forever, and will always remember how comforted she made me feel on the worst day of my life.
