July 2026 Honoree
Erin Grace, RN
Erin consistently demonstrates exceptional compassion, critical thinking, and dedication to patient- and family-centered care, which was especially evident in her care for a mother facing multiple barriers to learning.
From her very first interaction, Erin recognized that this situation required a more thoughtful and individualized approach. The mother primarily spoke Quechua, a rare language, and while a Spanish interpreter was available, Erin quickly identified that this alone would not be sufficient to fully support the mother’s understanding. In addition, the mother had significant learning needs, including difficulty with reading and writing, making traditional education methods ineffective.
Rather than accepting these challenges as limitations, Erin went above and beyond to ensure this mother received the education she needed to safely care for her child. She proactively partnered with Language Services to coordinate an additional virtual interpreter layer to supplement the in-person Spanish interpreter, ensuring more accurate and meaningful communication. This level of initiative and problem-solving reflects Erin’s deep commitment to equity in care.
Erin also recognized the importance of adapting the teaching approach itself. She advocated for and supported hands-on, experiential education as the most effective method for this mother, ensuring that complex information related to her child’s diagnosis was delivered in a way that was understandable and actionable.
The mother was scheduled for multiple education sessions, and Erin thoughtfully anticipated these needs by communicating key insights and plans to the FLC nurse who would be continuing education over the weekend. This ensured continuity, consistency, and a truly patient-centered experience.
Throughout this process, Erin demonstrated not only clinical excellence but also empathy, advocacy, and an unwavering commitment to meeting families where they are. She saw beyond the immediate task and recognized the whole person- her language, her learning needs, and her ability to care for her child and adjusted care accordingly.
Erin’s actions exemplify what the DAISY Award represents: extraordinary nursing care, meaningful communication, and going above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of patients and families. Her dedication ensured that this mother felt supported, understood, and empowered during a complex and challenging time.
