During one of her clinical rotations on the medical-surgical floor, Erika was assigned to care for an elderly patient recovering from surgery. The patient expressed to Erika that he was feeling anxious and overwhelmed. One of Erika’s peers noticed that she took the time to sit with him, held his hand, and patiently listened as he shared his fears about his recovery. Erika also spoke with the patient’s daughter, who had been visibly stressed, and encouraged her to take a moment for herself while Erika stayed with her father.  Erika’s calm presence and attentive care brought the patient and his daughter comfort, as the patient’s daughter even thanked Erika for her father’s care, saying, “Thank you for caring for him like he’s family”.  Through these simple yet profound acts, Erika demonstrated extraordinary compassionate care.
