I would like to commend Erik for the extraordinary compassion and kindness he consistently shows his patients and the staff on our unit.

We’ve had a 93-year-old patient on our unit for quite some time, so our staff has grown very accustomed to caring for him. Recently, we noticed that he had become increasingly sad. Many of us tried to encourage him and lift his spirits, but despite our efforts, his sadness remained.

Erik is a phenomenal nurse, whose pleasant spirit brings joy to both our unit and the patients he cares for. He consistently goes above and beyond, but what he did for this particular patient truly touched my heart.

Knowing that this patient is Haitian, Erik took it upon himself to purchase a Haitian food platter for the patient. It may sound like a simple gesture, but the impact was anything but small. Our patient smiled from ear to ear. He was extremely happy; you could visibly see and feel the shift in his mood.

Erik was a DAISY for this patient. He planted hope, care, and comfort during a dark time for this patient. Erik’s kindness pierced through the cloud that hovered over this patient and brought him a moment of genuine joy. What Erik did went beyond providing excellent nursing care. He saw the patient’s pain. He recognized something meaningful to him. His culture, food, and a taste of familiarity and used it to show him that he was seen and cared for.

I’ve been a nurse for 23 years, and I’ve never worked with a nurse as pleasant, positive, genuine, and caring as Erik. He is a rare jewel; he deserves this award. I want him to be seen and know that his labor is not in vain. This is only 1 example out of countless ways I’ve witnessed him go above and beyond for patients and staff. Anything thrown at him, he takes it with a smile and an amazing work ethic. He does the work of 2 nurses.

He embodies what this DAISY Award represents. Our patients and our unit are better because of him.

Thank you, Erik, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
