She decorated the room, hanging banners, balloons, and signs to make an otherwise drab room look like a bona fide wedding reception.
I am a coworker of Erica's in the MICU. We had a terminally ill patient admitted to our unit who wanted to marry his long-term partner. While social work and our manager coordinated the wedding ceremony, Erica facilitated much of the rest of the event. She used her own funds to buy decor and refreshments for the reception, which took place in our conference room. She decorated the room, hanging banners, balloons, and signs to make an otherwise drab room look like a bona fide wedding reception. She gathered a team of nursing staff to Hoyer Lift the patient into a recliner chair so he could be wheeled into the conference room. The recliner was decorated with streamers, signs, and cans to mimic the wedding vehicle, with signs saying "Just Married" on the back. Erica also bought the patient a down vest and a blanket to cover up with so he wouldn't get cold outside of his room. Family members and friends of the patient commented many times about what an amazing job she did, and how it was more than they ever could have hoped for in a very challenging time in their lives and the patient's life. Erica often goes above the norm for her patients, taking extra time for them to vent frustrations, making sure they are always fed, and advocating for them when they cannot speak for themselves. This is an accolade she has deserved for a while, and we are proud to have her as a member of our MICU team.
