The DAISY Foundation’s motto succinctly states: “Celebrating the compassionate care of extraordinary nurses”.

The purpose of the DAISY Award at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Springfield, MA is to honor and pay tribute to the special human considerations our nurse’s give to our patient’s and families as a very important part of the healing experience.

The Professional Nurse Practice Committee has oversight for the award process

Established guidelines for the nomination and selection of candidates and the first annual DAISY Award was presented to all RN’s at Shriners Hospital for Children for their extraordinary compassion and skillful care provided every day to our children, young adults and their families.

Every nurse displayed compassion, sensitivity and kindness to the six children who came for care from Haiti following their disastrous earthquake. There are so many examples that can be noted:

 The skillful assessments performed by nurses who volunteered to be present upon their arrival in the evening

 The comforting of children who witnessed the disaster and watched loving relatives, including a mother, who died

 The loving embracing of the children who only understood Creole and the staff who learned words in Creole so as to communicate and developed word boards for the children to express their needs

 The advocacy for each child throughout their hospitalization and clinic visits

 The extra work hours the nurses contributed for the special care given to the children included taking them out in the community to the zoo, mall and restaurants

 The team effort that was exhibited in locating and communicating with families in Haiti

 Donating clothing to assist the children who had never experienced nor were prepared for winter weather

 Prior to their return to Haiti, the nursing staff initiated a collection and purchased tents, gift cards for food, clothing and toys for them and their families

 The every day caring for children who require serious operations and procedures and provide their parents, who are under stress with insightful education and sensitivity

 The professionalism of the nurses at Springfield Hospital for Children – Springfield exemplify our mission, vision and core values daily and demonstrate the magnet forces set forth by AONE

 17 nurses have met all criteria for advancement on our Clinical Ladder

It was my pleasure on May 3, 2011, on behalf of The DAISY Foundation, and in the presence of Bonnie and Mark Barnes, to proclaim all nurses at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Springfield recipients of the first annual DAISY Award.
