I am nominating Enrique Rosado-Baez for the DAISY Award for his outstanding display of the iCARE values of Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence.
I had the pleasure of witnessing Enrique provide patient care during a medication administration encounter. What stood out to me was how Enrique didn’t just take the time to administer medications to this patient but also to connect with the patient. He introduced each medication slowly and respectfully. He explained the medication and its specific use, ensuring the patient understood why he was receiving it and how it would help him. Enrique was knowledgeable, thorough, and unhurried.
Throughout the encounter, Enrique showed Integrity and Excellence by providing quality education and practicing safe medication administration. He showed Advocacy by double-checking that the patient understood the information he was being given and by allowing the patient to ask questions. Above all, he showed Respect and Commitment by providing this education to the patient compassionately. You could hear it in his tone and see it in his body language that he cared about providing the best care to this patient and making him comfortable.
I noticed the patient seemed relieved and calm after his encounter with Enrique. This is what nursing should be… knowing your stuff and rocking your nursing skills while providing comfort and education to your patients. Enrique Rosado-Baez embodies what the DAISY Award stands for every day he walks into work to make a difference in his patients' lives.
