She has a natural ability to make patients feel seen, safe, and cared for in a deeply personal way.
Emily was my nurse for two overnight shifts at UMass Memorial Hospital in mid-February after I experienced a sudden cardiac arrest at home. I had never been hospitalized before, and the entire situation was completely unexpected and incredibly frightening. I was overwhelmed, physically, emotionally, and mentally as I transitioned from the Cardiac ICU to the step-down unit. From the moment Emily introduced herself, her presence brought me immediate comfort. She was warm, kind, and genuinely friendly in a way that made me feel safe during one of the most vulnerable moments of my life. Within minutes of arriving at the unit, Emily thoughtfully assessed not just my medical needs, but my comfort. She adjusted my bed to make sure I was positioned perfectly, made sure I had everything within reach, and noticed that my partner's chair was uncomfortable. Without hesitation, she went to an empty room and brought in a better chair so he could rest more comfortably. In that small but powerful gesture, she showed that she wasn’t just caring for a patient, she was caring for a family.
Shortly after my transfer, Emily accompanied me for a cardiac MRI. I had never had an MRI before and was nervous about what to expect. On the way there, she gently distracted me with light conversation and reassurance. Her calm, easy demeanor and the kindness she showed to her colleagues in the MRI unit made me feel like I was in steady, capable hands. My anxiety faded because she made the experience feel normal and manageable. Throughout both overnight shifts, Emily never wavered in her compassion. I was never without water. I never had to wait for help to get to the restroom. Each time I returned to bed overnight, she completely changed my sheets so I could rest comfortably. These may seem like small tasks, but in that moment, recovering from a life-threatening event, they meant everything.
When Emily finished her final shift with me, she explained that she would be off for the next several days and that I likely would not see her again. I remember feeling a wave of emotion wash over me. I almost cried. In that moment, I struggled to find the words to express how grateful I was for the care she had given me during such a frightening time. She had become my sense of stability and reassurance in an otherwise overwhelming experience. Emily combines clinical excellence with genuine human kindness. She has a natural ability to make patients feel seen, safe, and cared for in a deeply personal way. During one of the scariest weeks of my life, she was a steady source of comfort and calm. Because of Emily, I will always remember my hospital stay not only with fear, but with gratitude. Any patient fortunate enough to have Emily as their nurse is in exceptional hands. She embodies everything the DAISY Award represents, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition.
