Emily is an ACM graduate and a former advisee of mine from ACM. Recently, I found myself in a heartbreaking situation where my grandfather was going to be on comfort care at UPMC Western Maryland. Once we found out he was being transferred to the 5th floor, I reached out to Emily, knowing that she worked on that floor. I then discovered that she did work on that floor, but in another unit. By the time he was transferred upstairs, Emily was off shift but came to us immediately. She helped us understand the language used in comfort care situations. She helped us understand how medications would be used and why. She reassured me of my every fear and helped me know how to ask questions and what requests we may need to make along the way. She took care of me and my mom while my grandfather peacefully passed away (which took several days). When Emily was on break or coming off shift, she checked on us and held our hands when we cried. The most overwhelming gesture was that she then showed up at his viewing after he passed. She went above and beyond her call of duty to care for the caregivers. He was not her patient, but she cared about him and the people he loved so much. We know that caregiver fatigue is a real issue in this world, and Emily alleviated so much of that for us. Emily is amazing.
