We would like to nominate Nurse Emily for the DAISY Award for the extraordinary care, compassion, and dedication she showed during one of the most terrifying times of my life. My son, who is a leukemia patient, was admitted to the hospital for severe back pain. He had recently completed chemotherapy, and as a result, his immune system was extremely compromised. While under Emily’s care, my son suddenly began to deteriorate. He became delusional, spiked a high fever, and was placed on high-flow oxygen. His liver was failing, his heart rate soared, and he was in a complete state of delirium. The doctors were unsure of the cause— possibly HLH or another autoimmune disease. Everything happened so quickly, and the uncertainty was overwhelming. This crisis occurred at the end of Emily’s shift, right before the Easter holiday weekend. She had plans to travel several hours to be with her family, yet she chose to stay—an hour and a half past her shift—to support us. As a mother, watching my child suddenly become critically ill without clear answers was devastating. I was in shock, hyperventilating, unable to stand or process what was happening. Emily never left my side. She comforted me, spoke with such compassion, and made sure both my son and I were not alone in that moment of chaos. In the days that followed, Emily continued to check on my son, even though he was no longer her patient. Her care extended beyond her professional duty—it was deeply human. She gave me strength when I had none and showed a level of empathy and dedication that I will never forget. Nurse Emily exemplifies the very best of nursing. Her kindness, selflessness, and commitment to her patients and their families are exactly what the DAISY Award represents. I am forever grateful for her presence during those critical hours. She truly made a difference in our lives.
