The Emergency Department team comes together every day to save lives, often under the most stressful and unpredictable circumstances. Their ability to collaborate seamlessly, adapt quickly, and deliver expert care is the foundation of what they do. While this is their daily reality, there was one event in particular that captured the very essence of the teamwork and collaboration that defines this team—and it ultimately changed the course of a person's life. During a patient's stay on a nursing unit, they experienced a sudden altered mental status. An MRI was completed, which confirmed a stroke, and the patient was subsequently taken for a routine CT scan as part of the stroke alert protocol. While in CT, the patient suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest. A Code Blue was called overhead in the Emergency Department, but was not announced hospital-wide, leaving the hospital code team unaware of the situation. Without hesitation, the Emergency Department team immediately responded. Present in the room at the time were Daniel (AOD) and Tim (Stat Nurse). Very quickly, the ED team arrived, including Dr. Alatriste, Dr. Cabrera, Chris (RT), Jenna (PCT), Alfred (RN), Patricia (RN), Kati (RN), Abby (RN), and Crystal (RN). Each team member played a pivotal role in this patient's resuscitation. They worked seamlessly together, administering lifesaving medications, delivering high-quality CPR, and achieving ROSC quickly. The team also intubated the patient under challenging circumstances, as there was an immense amount of blood from the patient's mouth and nose that complicated their efforts. Despite these challenges, their commitment to the patient never wavered, and they continued to provide expert, compassionate care. Even after achieving ROSC, the patient began to decompensate again. The Emergency Department team remained steadfast at the bedside, methodically troubleshooting and ruling out potential causes. After reviewing radiology findings, it was determined that the patient had developed a pneumothorax. Once again, the team's quick thinking and expertise were critical—placing a chest tube promptly, which stabilized the patient. What makes this story even more remarkable is that the Emergency Department was full that day. Yet, the team never declined to provide care for this patient, even though technically, he was not an ED patient. They continued to run their busy department seamlessly while also dedicating themselves fully to this life-threatening emergency. Their ability to balance both responsibilities without sacrificing the quality of care they provide every day is a true testament to their teamwork, skill, and dedication. Without the immediate attention, quick response, and collaboration of this Emergency Department team, this patient may not have survived. Their efforts not only saved a life but also embodied the very best of nursing leadership, interdisciplinary teamwork, and compassionate care. For these reasons, I proudly nominate the Emergency Department team for the DAISY Team Award.
