September 2016 Honoree
Elvira Garcia, BSN, RN
Elvira "Elvie" Garcia has been a dedicated NICU nurse for many years, providing compassionate and exceptional care to critically ill and fragile infants and supporting families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Although she does not hold a formal leadership title, she is widely recognized by her peers as a leader within the unit because of her clinical expertise, professionalism, compassion, and unwavering commitment to both patients and staff.
Elvie is someone that nurses consistently turn to for guidance and support with patient care, complex clinical situations, and communication with families. She leads by example through her calm presence, teamwork, and willingness to help others without hesitation. Her ability to support both families and coworkers during stressful and emotional situations reflects the type of nurse and person she is.
One moment that especially demonstrates Elvie’s compassion and dedication occurred during a difficult neonatal resuscitation. While managing her own patient assignment, she recognized that another nurse was struggling emotionally and physically after the event. Elvie immediately stepped in to assist, stayed with the nurse to help ensure patient care responsibilities were completed, and continued offering emotional support even after the situation had stabilized. She later followed up with the nurse to check on her well-being and offer additional support if needed. Her actions demonstrated not only exceptional teamwork, but also genuine compassion and empathy toward her colleagues during challenging moments.
Elvie’s dedication to improving patient outcomes extends far beyond her bedside responsibilities. She actively participates in quality improvement initiatives within the NICU and is part of the team developing an IVH prevention bundle aimed at reducing the incidence of head bleeds in our most vulnerable infants. She also serves on workgroups focused on reviewing and revising nursing policies to ensure care practices remain evidence-based and aligned with the needs of our patients and staff.
What is especially remarkable is that Elvie continues contributing to these initiatives on her own personal time, outside of her scheduled shifts. I specifically remember a time when her own son was seriously ill, yet she still remained engaged in communicating and contributing to the IVH policy work because of how deeply she cares about improving the quality of care we provide to infants and families. That level of dedication speaks volumes about her character, compassion, and commitment to nursing.
In her interactions with families, Elvie consistently demonstrates empathy, patience, and understanding. She communicates with parents in a calm and compassionate manner, helping them feel supported, informed, and reassured during emotionally difficult experiences in the NICU. Families and staff alike trust her because they know she genuinely cares.
In addition to her work on the IVH initiative, Elvie willingly volunteered to participate in a workgroup focused on improving care for ventilated infants in the NICU. She never hesitates to contribute where help is needed and continually seeks opportunities to improve patient care and support the unit. All of this work is done in addition to her regular bedside responsibilities, reflecting her extraordinary commitment to infants, families, coworkers, and the profession of nursing.
Elvie exemplifies the qualities of a DAISY Nurse through her compassion, teamwork, leadership, advocacy, and dedication to excellence in patient care. She consistently goes above and beyond for both patients and staff, and she is truly deserving of this recognition.
