Elsa Guzja, RN
At 8 months into our pregnancy, we experienced every parent's worst nightmare when we learned that our baby boy no longer had a heartbeat. We entered the hospital completely devastated, frightened, and unprepared for what we were about to endure. During the most painful and traumatic experience of our lives, the care we received was extraordinary. Although the entire team was incredible, Elsa Guzja's care was unlike anything we could have ever expected, even in our wildest dreams.
Elsa did not simply care for us as a nurse. She cared for us as human beings, as grieving parents, and as a family whose entire world had just changed. Her compassion was deeply personal and sincere. She gave us comfort when there were no words, strength when we had none left, and reassurance during moments of overwhelming fear and heartbreak. She never made us feel rushed, forgotten, or alone. She was present with us in every sense of the word. She treated our baby boy with tenderness, dignity, and love, and she treated us as though our pain truly mattered to her.
In a situation filled with unbearable sadness, Elsa created a sense of safety, peace, and humanity that we will never forget. There are certain moments in life that remain with you forever. We will always remember the loss of our son, but we will also always remember the woman who stood beside us during that loss and helped make the darkest days of our lives even slightly more bearable. Elsa's compassion cannot be measured by a chart, a procedure, or a job description. What she gave us came from her heart. Her kindness changed our experience, and her presence left a permanent impact on our family. No parent should ever have to endure what we experienced, but every family facing such a devastating loss deserves to have someone like Elsa beside them. She represents the very best of nursing: clinical care combined with extraordinary empathy, dignity, selflessness, and love. We will never be able to fully express what Elsa did for us or how much it meant. We will carry her kindness with us for the rest of our lives, and we cannot imagine anyone more deserving of the award.
