Liz maintains the “nursing ethics” we all learned when we were in school.
How did this Nurse Leader promote and enhance the image of nursing within the organization, community, and the profession? The image of nursing often suffers, particularly in recent years. Liz maintains the “nursing ethics” we all learned when we were in school. Compassion and heartfelt care are things that are no longer considered important, and even a member of our upper leadership asked the question earlier this year: “Is nursing dead?” No, nursing isn’t dead. I believe, though, that quality nurses seek out positions in which they can maintain their clinical foundation and still continue to actually provide care, something that is difficult to do bedside for reasons such as time constraints, understaffing, emotional stress, unsafe work environments, demanding physical nature, and high stress. I never knew Liz as a bedside nurse, but the demeanor she exhibits with her team is one of patience, education, and promotion of the job satisfaction of her nurses. She leads by example in that area. At times, I have questions or situations I need to speak with her about, and she has always made time for me. I am aware that she has also assisted another team member in serious crisis situations and is available for any of us who find themselves in unusual circumstances. If she needs to be out of the office, she always lets us know who will be covering for her. Somehow, Liz has managed to escape the jaded nature that so many healthcare workers now have. I believe she sought out a place where she could maintain her true nature as a nurse and share that with those of us who may have faced the burnout that is so prevalent.
