She brings lightness to heavy moments and creates an environment where patients feel safe and valued.
Elizabeth “Liz” Mecham is the recipient of the DAISY Award because she has a remarkable ability to sense what people truly need and respond with compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication. Her care reaches far beyond routine nursing responsibilities, touching the lives of patients, families, and coworkers in ways that create a culture of safety, joy, and belonging.
Liz ensures that every person she encounters feels seen, heard, and sincerely cared for. She has repeatedly stayed late to provide specialized neuro care when others were unsure how to proceed, and she frequently volunteers to come in when the unit is short-staffed. Her commitment extends beyond clinical excellence — she remembers birthdays, celebrates milestones, and brings warmth to the workplace. She readily steps into committees and projects, always looking for ways to support her team. Her kindness extends into personal acts of generosity, from helping coworkers in times of crisis to offering meals, shelter, and emotional support when they needed it most.
What stands out most is how Liz cares for her patients. Colleagues describe her as the unit’s “social butterfly” because laughter often follows wherever she goes. She has a gift for helping patients smile, easing fear, and reminding them of their humanity during difficult hospital stays. She brings lightness to heavy moments and creates an environment where patients feel safe and valued. Since becoming a Clinical Care Organizer, she has embraced mentoring newer nurses, encouraging confidence and excellence in others. Staff consistently praise her unwavering support and the sense of calm she brings to the floor.
Liz embodies the highest ideals of nursing: professionalism, empathy, leadership, and heart. Her presence elevates the entire unit and makes everyone around her feel secure. Patients trust her. Families find comfort in her. Coworkers rely on her. She is a nurse who transforms spaces simply by being in them, and her impact is felt long after her shift ends. Liz’s compassion and professionalism make her deeply deserving of the DAISY Award.
