This level of foresight, initiative, and advocacy is something I will never forget.
I am recognizing Nurse Edna for the DAISY Award for her extraordinary compassion, clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment to providing exceptional patient care during my recent five-day chemotherapy admission at El Camino Hospital.

From the moment I checked into my room on day one, it was clear that Edna was an exceptionally experienced and knowledgeable oncology nurse. She demonstrated a deep understanding of chemotherapy protocols and potential treatment reactions. When she noticed early signs that my regimen might require adjustment, she immediately communicated with my oncology doctor, ensuring that my treatment was modified promptly and safely. Throughout my stay, I witnessed firsthand how closely and effectively she collaborated with the medical team—doctors, assistants, and multiple hospital departments—to ensure every aspect of my care proceeded smoothly and without delay.

One particular example stands out and reflects the level of dedication that defines Edna’s care. I was scheduled for a bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture between 2:30 and 3:30 PM. In preparation, I was required to fast—no food and only limited water—for eight hours beforehand. My last meal had been the previous evening at 5:30 PM, meaning I was approaching nearly 20 hours without food. Recognizing the physical strain this placed on me, Edna took it upon herself to proactively coordinate with the imaging department. She stayed in constant communication with their team, watching closely for any opportunity to move my procedures earlier.

As soon as an earlier slot became available, Edna was already at my door. She helped me onto the transport cart herself so I could be taken immediately to the imaging department—well before my scheduled time—helping reduce my discomfort and prevent further delay in much-needed procedures. This level of foresight, initiative, and advocacy is something I will never forget.

Additionally, I experience short-term memory challenges and often forget things unintentionally. Edna consistently ensured that my medications were brought right on time, supporting me with patience, kindness, and attention to detail. She never made me feel embarrassed or burdened; instead, she treated me with dignity, understanding, and compassion every step of the way.

Edna exemplifies what it means to be an extraordinary nurse. She not only delivers exceptional clinical care but also advocates for her patients, anticipates their needs, and provides emotional support during incredibly difficult moments. Her dedication goes far above and beyond her daily responsibilities, and I am deeply grateful for the comfort and confidence she gave me during such a challenging time.

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I say Edna represents the very best of nursing—skillful, compassionate, proactive, and profoundly caring.
