It is very rare to see a nurse go above and beyond the way she does and did. Nurses have a very demanding job, and to find a nurse who manages to bring so much laughter and joy in the midst of a stressful job is a true blessing.
Our 91-year-old mother was a patient at this hospital for an overnight stay following a heart procedure, TAVR. This was actually Mom’s second stay in a 6-week period.
As would be expected, our family had many concerns about Mom having this valve replacement at her age. When mom came up to the room following her stay in recovery after the procedure, she was in a six-hour window of time during which she had to remain flat on her back and not move.
Mom does not do well lying flat on her back, especially for six hours! She was dreading the 6 hours (In her previous hospital stay following stents placed in her heart, she had to lie the same way for six hours. To her, it felt like twice the six hours as she was miserable.
Now enters Doris M., the nurse assigned to care for Mom for the afternoon and evening. Doris was like a ray of sunshine, and from the moment she first set foot into the room, Mom, as well as the rest of our family, immediately felt a sense of relief.
Doris had the best personality. She was funny and kept Mom and our family laughing and the environment pleasant all evening. Doris was quick to respond to all of Mom’s needs and often anticipated her needs before Mom even asked or knew what she needed.
Her bubbly personality and funny interactions with Mom helped to make the 6 hours not only bearable but also helped them pass in no time. This time it felt like about two hours.
Although Doris had a bubbly personality and kept us all in stitches with laughter, she exhibited an equal amount of professionalism in the nursing care she provided. She was always quick to handle any issues that arose and worked tirelessly to make Mom’s stay the best it could possibly be.
It was evident that Doris does not see her duties as just a “job” but rather as a ministry and calling to make a difference in the lives of her patients.
Mom and our family found ourselves looking forward to her coming into the room, knowing that spirits would be lifted immediately when she arrived. Her shift ended at 7 pm, and we hated to see her go.
The following day, Mom was to be released from the hospital, and we could not have been happier when Doris returned to her shift at 7 am on Friday morning and took care of Mom until she was discharged.
Our family felt extremely blessed to have had Doris M. as the nurse caring for our Mom. By the time Mom was discharged, Doris felt like family!

We want to thank Doris M. for being so amazing and making a difference in the care, comfort, and lives of her patients! Thank you for being a light in this world and for providing such excellent care for our mother.
We turned our greatest treasure, our mother of 91 years, over to your care, and you, in exchange, became a huge treasure to our family as well. Keep up the wonderful job you are doing, it really matters to your patients and families!
