Donna has proven time and again to be a strong patient advocate. She goes above and beyond to ensure the patient’s voice is heard and their wishes are respected. On one particular shift, a patient arrived in triage in active labor. It was a rushed but critical time as she was already 8 centimeters dilated. Before the procedure, the decision was made to put the patient under general anesthesia. The patient immediately expressed her concerns and did not wish to be put under. Donna ensured the team heard and respected her wishes. The patient delivered her baby safely. The next day, the patient told me that Donna was a heaven-sent; she was so scared, but Donna was her saving grace. As we know, maternal morbidity and mortality rates are disproportionately high for women of color. Donna continues to be a champion in providing safe, effective, and competent care.
