He would come in all smiles and join in our conversations, excited to meet the rest of our families.
We met Diego about halfway through our 14-day hospital stay. He had come in a few times to watch or help with something, but he wasn’t our nurse until the day we got some pretty difficult news regarding some stroke activity. We joked about not liking him as well as our other nurses because he was on duty when we got the news. Our family handles sadness with laughter and tears. He experienced both of those with us during the days we got to spend with him. He would come in all smiles and join in our conversations, excited to meet the rest of our families. For the bulk of my dad’s stay, it was my mom and I there 24/7 with tons of other family in and out. My dad spent his last birthday at the hospital, two days before he passed. Diego brought balloons in on his birthday and made the day special. He was so kind and compassionate to my dad and our family; he made the unimaginable experience more bearable. My dad was on a ventilator most of the time there, so our nurses didn’t get to know my dad, but they got to know him through us and got to know the rest of us (maybe a little too well). When people ask what happened to my dad and we tell the story of his hospital stay, we always talk about our “baby nurses” and the difference they made in our lives during those weeks. We couldn’t begin to thank Diego and the other nurses enough for everything they did for our family. I believe he will continue to be a blessing to all the patients he has at the hospital.
