She reached out to Diana, who generously came down and sat with Mom, gave emotional support, and went over pumping education, troubleshooting, and how to label her milk for NICU.
We had a Spanish-speaking momma in our NICU who had been discharged recently. She had come to room in on 2S with her baby, who was receiving IV antibiotics for rule out sepsis. Baby unfortunately needed to be put on IV fluids during the night because of low blood sugars. The bedside RN noticed that despite encouraging Mom to pump after each breastfeed attempt (due to limiting breastfeed time), Mom had not pumped. When she asked, she stated that she did not have any pump parts and did not know how to use the pump. She also appeared overwhelmed with the change in the baby's plan of care. Unfortunately, we are spoiled by our postpartum and lactation colleagues in regard to pumping education, so I am not very familiar with the initiation of pumping/hand expression/ etc. I went to the PP charge RN and explained the situation, asking if she happened to have someone Spanish-speaking who would be willing to come down and educate Mom on pumping initiation. She reached out to Diana, who generously came down and sat with Mom, gave emotional support, and went over pumping education, troubleshooting, and how to label her milk for NICU. Mom visibly appeared calmer and more comfortable after Diana's visit, and I can't thank her enough!
