Destin cares for patients and their family, but I know from experience with watching him work, he easily forms relationships with patients and family that impact the quality of care that they receive.
Destin was assisting in the care of a patient who came into the emergency department for his AICD firing. After the team recognized that the patient was experiencing refractory ventricular tachycardia and his AICD was failing to pace or cardiovert him out of the rhythm, the patient was brought to the critical care room within the pod.
The patient received two rounds of amiodarone boluses, which did eventually control the rhythm enough that the AICD could pace the patient out of his V tach for periods of time. EKG was repeated, and the doctor determined that the patient was having a STEMI.
Destin, continuing to assist in the care of this patient and his wife, went up to the cath lab, where the patient was received by the team there. He and another nurse stopped by the waiting room to speak to the patient's wife, and it was discovered that in trying to get to the ER as quickly as she could, she forgot her phone and had no way to contact her daughter. They assured her that he and the other nurse would look in the patient's chart to see if his daughter was listed as an emergency contact.
Destin followed up with the patient's wife, and after discovering that the wife was the only one listed, he went back to the cath lab waiting room and searched through Facebook with the wife until he found her. He let the patient speak with her daughter. All of this happened near the change of shift, and Destin stayed with the patient's wife to help her two hours past his shift so that she wasn't waiting alone to find out the results of the cardiac cath.
This is just a single example of how Destin cares for patients and their family, but I know from experience with watching him work, he easily forms relationships with patients and family that impact the quality of care that they receive.
