You gave both the patient and family your undivided attention and upheld your moral obligation to teach the parents how to care for their child at home, knowing that may not be the outcome.
A bravo simply was not enough to recognize your excellent nursing care. Today was a challenging day for all of us. A social situation of that magnitude is not something you or I or anyone could be prepared for or expect to experience, especially this early in your career. You should be extremely proud of yourself. Today, you exemplified all of CHoP's ICARE values.

Integrity: You gave both the patient and family your undivided attention and upheld your moral obligation to teach the parents how to care for their child at home, knowing that may not be the outcome. You put a lot of effort into educating, which is a fundamental part of nursing practice.

Compassion: Though what happened today was beyond our control, you recognized the situation, were compassionate in your responses to the family's questions, and continued to provide excellent nursing care to your patients.

Accountability: Even amid all the social challenges you faced today, you provided each of your patients with the excellent care that CHoP expects of its staff. You were the middleman among many interdisciplinary staff members and helped coordinate efforts in this challenging situation. You kept everyone informed and brought a sense of calmness and professionalism to the room. You asked all the right questions and sought out support appropriately.

Respect: No matter what the outcome was going to be, you showed that family respect and were there for them and their daughter during this difficult time.

Excellence: You remained unbiased and continued to provide the necessary care for the patient and family. You delegated appropriately, and you advocated for your patient and her family. I can't say this enough: You should be very proud of yourself. It's situations like these where people can begin to feel overwhelmed. I know I did. It is hard to pinpoint events in people's careers at CHoP that exemplify all of CHoP's ICARE values. It was very obvious to me, as well as your peers, how well you handled today. I hope you remember today not for how difficult or challenging it was, but as an example of how every CHoP nurse should carry themselves, demonstrating all of the ICARE values. I am honored to work alongside you and cannot wait to see how you grow here at CHoP.
