I understood most of what he said thanks to his ability to break down the medical jargon and patiently answer my questions.
My stepdad had been in Integris for around two weeks prior to his heart stopping. I knew he was in bad shape, but no one prepares you for the stomach-dropping phone call in the night to tell you that your loved one's heart had stopped and was being moved to the ICU. After an hour and a half drive to the hospital, my nerves were shot. I had no idea what I was about to walk into. Deitric was his nurse that first night. He had me wait in the waiting room until he had my stepdad set up in his room. He then came out and very calmly explained what had happened, what they were doing at the moment, and what they would be doing over the next few hours. I understood most of what he said thanks to his ability to break down the medical jargon and patiently answer my questions. Before he let me go back, he prepared me for what I would see and all the machines. He also gave me some really sound advice. "If I don't panic, you don't panic." I can't tell you how many times I have repeated that to myself and family members before they go in. The rest of the night consisted of Deitric explaining things to me, my stepdad being taken for tests/someone coming in to do trays, Deitric explaining more to me, me taking a nap in the comfy chair he dragged in for me, and repeat. I probably asked the poor guy 200 questions. He was patient the whole way through. He explained just how not great my stepdad's situation was without being overly clinical. You could tell he had compassion for my stepdad and me. He also took a few minutes to chit-chat about cars and home renovations. I know he had other things he could be doing, but just a few minutes for a mental break was so needed and appreciated. I wish my stepdad had been awake to talk to him. They would have had lots to discuss.
