Her care is holistic, nurturing the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of those she serves - and this is something she wants to help spread throughout the organization through her work with Shared Governance.
Deb exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate, innovative, and purpose-driven nurse. As a co-chair of Centria’s Shared Governance Committee, Deb has taken an active leadership role in shaping positive change from the front lines. But her influence extends far beyond the committee work—it's in every shift she works, every interaction she has, and every heartfelt moment she creates.
Although new to the world of home care, Deb has embraced it wholeheartedly, not only providing skilled nursing care but also infusing each day with purpose, connection, and creativity. Her passion is evident in everything she does. For her nonverbal patient, Deb has gone above and beyond to open new channels of communication and joy by creating videos to share with grandparents, planning tie-dyeing sessions for the whole family, and thoughtfully crafting activities that bring mental stimulation and emotional connection. These moments are not simply diversions to help her get through a shift; they are windows into the world of a patient whose voice is often unheard, and they are filled with love, dignity, and presence each and every shift for her patient.
Deb succintly stated to me that her goal is for her patient to “see her life has value and meaning.” That simple, powerful intention clearly drives everything she does. It’s in the way she tells stories about her work and her patient, filled with emotion, purpose, and humility. It’s also clearly demonstrated in the extra effort she puts into every shift. And it’s in the way she inspires her colleagues, which can serve as a reminder to all of us of what nursing can be when we lead with heart.
Through her actions, Deb has created opportunities for connection that this patient and her family never thought possible. She’s given joy in moments where joy once felt out of reach. She has given a voice to the voiceless, to simply communicate life. She has brought a family closer together than ever before through the additional interaction she provides. Her care is holistic, nurturing the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of those she serves - and this is something she wants to help spread throughout the organization through her work with Shared Governance.
Deb’s impact is profound, not just on her patient and their family, but on the entire culture of Centria Healthcare. She embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award and is a shining example of the difference one nurse can make when they bring their whole heart to the role. We are lucky to have her, and even luckier to learn from her example.
