After the procedure, Debbie personally walked him back to his ER room, and when they arrived, he gave her a hug and said, “You basically saved my life.”
I would like to nominate Nurse Debbie for the DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional compassion, support, and humanity she showed our teenage son during one of the most difficult experiences of his life. Our son had to undergo a contrast imaging procedure on his urethra—a highly invasive, painful, and emotionally distressing process. The procedure required multiple attempts, a full team of medical professionals, and on-site pain management.
Through it all, Debbie remained stationed at his head, gently consoling him, talking him through the experience, and encouraging him to hold on just a little longer. When the team paused to administer more medication and regroup, Debbie stayed by his side. She cleaned him up, covered him carefully to restore some comfort and dignity, and made sure he never felt alone. Her presence was calm, constant, and deeply reassuring. She went above and beyond to make an unbearable moment more bearable—not just physically, but emotionally. She asked our son questions about himself, used teen “lingo” to make him smile and feel understood, and connected with him in a way that only a truly gifted nurse can.
After the procedure, she personally walked him back to his ER room, and when they arrived, he gave her a hug and said, “You basically saved my life.” Debbie’s kindness, empathy, and patient-centered care exemplify everything the DAISY Award stands for. Our family will never forget what she did for our son that day.
