August 2026 Honoree
Darlene Sharpe, RN
Darlene was my nurse when I first got admitted. As she was getting to know me before she started rounding on other patients, I was moved out of her assignment. She showed a load of compassion. I haven’t felt in quite a moment, so important and cared for by a nurse taking care of me. Other hospitals have just made me feel like I was there for the wrong reasons, and I’ve just not been important.
While I was in pain last night, Darlene came down to just hug me and do breathing exercises, which help to distract me from the pain. She even brought some sensory toys and coloring books so I could have other tools to distract me from my pain.
She continued to come and check on me throughout the night when she could. She also brainstormed ways to help me when she didn’t have to. Darlene made me feel loved, cared about, and safe.
In the morning before she left, Darlene came to check on me once more and gave me a huge hug. The world needs more nurses like Darlene, and I’m very excited to walk in their footsteps on my nursing school journey.
