Dani was able to model a composed demeanor, using relaxed body language, and acknowledging the emotions of patients, families, and staff.
I was having a difficult time with a patient family member. She was getting verbally abusive towards me. I was attempting to de-escalate the situation. My attempts were not effective. Dani overheard the situation while doing leader rounds. She stepped into the room to intervene. She was able to effectively de-escalate and, overall, help my attempts. I was extremely grateful for her help in this situation. Dani was able to model a composed demeanor, using relaxed body language, and acknowledging the emotions of patients, families, and staff.

A nurse leader plays a crucial role in de-escalating tense situations in healthcare settings by remaining calm, empathetic, and solution-focused. Active listening and offering clear options empower individuals to feel heard and respected, which can diffuse frustration. Nurse leaders also clarify issues, find common ground, and communicate with a calm and respectful tone to prevent escalation. When necessary, they know when to involve additional support, always prioritizing safety.

After this situation was resolved, Dani followed up with me to ensure that my concerns were addressed. By honing these de-escalation techniques, Dani fosters a safe, supportive atmosphere that promotes effective care and teamwork. She is the real MVP.
