Thank you Danielle for being such an amazing example of why we got into nursing.
I have made several observations as a team member in PCU that I feel are shining examples of the PETALS of the foundation for the DAISY Award. Daily you can see the PASSION Danielle has for the nursing profession. She is always eager to learn, grow, and share her experiences with those around her. On this specific day, her EMPATHY was shown with a patient whose family just made one of the most difficult decisions one could be met with.; the decision to sign with hospice. The family TRUSTED Danielle based on the previous shifts she was assigned to care for her. This day, Danielle was not assigned to care for this patient, but she used her many wonderful ADMIRABLE ATTRIBUTES to collaborate with the team to ensure that every single need was met for the family during the last moments with their loved one. Danielle showed SELFLESSNESS by using her lunch break to drive to Publix so the patient's room could be filled with flowers. Her comment was, "I heard she likes flowers" making sure each bouquet had a beautiful vase. She bought these with her own funds and also decorated the room so it would seem less clinical for the family as they spent time with their family member. She collaborated with the patient experience to provide a beautiful handmade quilt for the patient’s bed, again to make the patient more personal and comfortable. Danielle continued to check on the family frequently, while still managing her own patient load and orienting a new RN. Once the patient passed, she was able to fulfill the family's request to have a fingerprint made as a keepsake. While obtaining the fingerprint, she noticed a darker area within the print that formed a perfect heart shape. The family was beyond amazed by this lasting memory and in awe that their loved one left them such a touching image. She obtained assistance in the ICU to capture the patient’s telemetry rhythm, creating a "heartbeat in a bottle" memento for the family. They expressed their gratitude for providing these lasting personal memories. Thank you Danielle for being such an amazing example of why we got into nursing and for sharing your gift with those in your care. Nursing is truly her calling.
