Perhaps most importantly to me, she took the initiative to call me with great concern while barely able to keep herself composed as she informed me that my dad had ended any further treatments. Had she not done this, I might not have been there for his last breath.
Dana Shedd and Kristin Falcon were two nurses who provided excellent caregiving to my father for several weeks at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.

My father was closely observed by the oncology staff, diagnosed with a very difficult to treat, late in life development of hemophilia. For weeks, he suffered from internal bleeding, which eventually took his life. While he was being treated, these two nurses, in my opinion, rose above and beyond their job criteria to provide comfort and compassion to my father and my family.

While in my father's room, I had conversations with Dana, from her I learned that she had fought leukemia and conquered her battle. Also learned that she is near becoming certified in chemotherapy to be even more skilled in what she does. I noticed how polite Dana was with my father and the staff she worked with. I couldn't count the times I heard her say please and thank you.

Perhaps most importantly to me, she took the initiative to call me with great concern while barely able to keep herself composed as she informed me that my dad had ended any further treatments. Had she not done this, I might not have been there for his last breath. Kristin was the nurse who came in for the night shift that day. She very compassionately spoke to me about what to expect now that my dad was transitioning into hospice care.

Kristin sat with me during a family chat, we had with several of my siblings. As I had trouble relaying and holding onto my strength after extended hours without sleep, Kristin walked us through the process and what to expect. She assured me with her experience, that she and the staff that night, would keep my dad comfortable. She did as she promised.

At approximately 1:15 pm Saturday, my father went home to be with my mother, who passed one day shy of a month prior. As a believer, I confidently can say that these two ladies were a gift from God and are a credit to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.

The very least I can do is nominate them both for the recognition and say thank you to them both! Well done, Dana and Kristin! All the best to you both!
