Damaris took care of him multiple times and always with that amazing smile and warm heart.
I honestly don't even know where to start with how much our family appreciates the level of care that Damaris gave our "Poppie". I told her that when we left, she deserved an entire bouquet of daisies for the comfort she provided to our whole family. He was in and out of the hospital and rehab for a couple of months due to an amputation. Eventually, his kidneys began to have issues, and he started retaining fluid in his lungs.
After a few setbacks, we made the difficult decision to transition his care to comfort only. This decision caused us a tremendous amount of heartache. Damaris took care of him multiple times and always with that amazing smile and warm heart. Throughout the week of his decline, she was attentive and worked so hard to try and help him. When it became obvious that he would not be going home, she was there again with her gentle voice to talk to him. She never allowed him to become uncomfortable, which made for a much easier transition for all of us. Then there were the endless hugs of support she gave to all of us. She never left her shift without checking on us. She even did this on the one night she was not assigned to take care of him. You have no idea how much we needed it. Her kind words of support and checking to make sure we didn't need anything speak volumes about her character. She has something as a nursing instructor that I cannot teach my students, and that is to genuinely care about people. She is a rare gem, and I am so thankful she was at Freeman when we needed her the most!
***************
On the day that we arrived at Freeman, my Step-dad had a stroke and had fallen. When he got to his room about an hour before shift change, the nurse on duty had introduced themselves, but the really amazing nurse was Damaris, the night shift nurse. She was so respectful, compassionate, informative, just a very wonderful personality, and so kind and professional.
Damaris, I want to say to you, be the amazing nurse that you are, don't ever lose your drive and compassion for caring for other people. You have an amazing ability. Thank you so much for the job you do tirelessly.
