This is the kind of excellent and compassionate care that Daisy provides to every single patient that she cares for.
I work with Daisy in the PICU. She is a phenomenal nurse, and her heart is bigger than Texas. Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of working with Daisy while she cared for a very special patient.
This patient is 17 years old, has chronic health conditions, and lost his mom during COVID. Daisy really worked hard with this patient to improve his overall hygiene and make him feel seen and cared for. In one shift, she bathed him around five times. The patient really wanted a haircut, and Daisy made it her mission (with dad's permission). She found someone who could bring her clippers. Daisy spent hours getting all the tangles out and getting his hair ready for a cut.
When she was prepping his hair, he made comments to Daisy about how much he really appreciated her care, knowing she didn't have to do all this. He stated it was really special to him because no one had touched his hair since his mom had passed away. Daisy, of course, holding back the tears, continued on her mission of working on his hair. What was really special was that Daisy took the time to have heartfelt conversations with this patient during this time.
Daisy explained to the patient that his mom was always with him, and they talked together about finding ways to honor his mom. I was lucky enough to get to hear part of this conversation, and seeing the connection these two made was very heart-warming. By the end of the shift, this patient was wearing not only a new hair dew but a brand new smile a mile wide. He looked like a whole new kid, no longer had matted hair in his eyes.
This patient stated that because of the care Daisy gave him, he too wanted to be a nurse someday and give that kind of care back to others. As touching as this story was, this was just one of the many times that Daisy has gone above and beyond and truly made a difference in the lives of her patients.
