Cyrus got the patient into the shower, showered him, got a new brief on him, changed all the bedding, and offered further bowel care if the patient wished.
Cyrus helps all members of the team in an efficient and caring way, which in turn helps patients be well cared for in a timely manner. The PCT/CNA was busy, as was I, so I asked if Cyrus could go check on the patient. The patient had a major diarrhea incident. Cyrus got the patient into the shower, showered him, got a new brief on him, changed all the bedding, and offered further bowel care if the patient wished. Cyrus will help each member of our team if he is able. He doesn't put it off for 5-10 minutes like many people would do, hoping that the CNA or RN assigned will eventually become free and take care of it. He doesn't expect a return for what he does. He also makes assignments as fairly as possible. He is the most helpful and most willing to answer any questions of any charge nurse I have worked with over the last 4 years. He is knowledgeable and understanding of others' decisions/choices while letting them know what the best practice is and why. An example is cna report sheets. On our floor, nurses fill out the report for the next shift CNA. The CNA should be able to come in, pick up the sheets, and immediately begin getting vital signs and finish in about 30 minutes. The previous shift CNAs are answering call lights during this time (rather than doing report). This is efficient and wise, saving time and effort. However, he understands that many techs want to combine the report sheets into one sheet in their own handwriting so they feel more prepared. So, he encourages the best practice of grabbing the sheets and starting immediately, but understands why some choose not to.
Cyrus makes the whole unit run much smoother, makes the shift feel more productive, less stressful, and more fun. I feel like I can count on Cyrus when I need him and can constantly learn from him. One learning that comes to mind is that we do intermittent cathing, and I had asked, shouldn't we wait, say 2 or 4 hours before we cath again? He said no, it is dependent on the volume, not on time, and directed me to the rehabilitation textbook that talks about bladder volumes and cathing. I feel most confident when he is the charge nurse because I know that he knows what he is doing and talking about. Also, that he will help when I need it, and that I can ask him anything. He is respectful, kind, and gets the job done without hesitation when it needs to be done.
