"Curtis is the best kind of leader; one whose positive impact goes beyond the staff he oversees."
Curtis exemplifies what it means to be a nurse leader. His leadership has incredibly improved not only his staff morale but also his patient's experience. Before his leadership, his team felt like the red-headed stepchild. They were hungry for leadership and needed a strong leader to take the helm. Curtis immediately stepped in and brought his team up to speed. He introduced med scanning reports and other standards and metrics that his staff were responsible for and had never heard of. He celebrated their wins and helped focus on their opportunities. Curtis also started celebrating his team’s work anniversaries and birthdays. Those little things mean the world to a previously disenfranchised team. Curtis continued to be a very present and responsive leader. When he heard that his team was using the patient’s drinking system for their own water, he immediately purchased them their own water system for the breakroom. When COVID hit, shortly after he took on this new job, he rose to the occasion. His floor became the one tasked with the majority of COVID patients. Throughout the challenges of the pandemic, he continued to be an advocate for his team and their needs. He continuously spoke up for his team and made their needs known. His influence not only brought his team together but also improved his patient experience. In the first 6 months of his leadership, his patient experience scores rose.  Under his leadership, due to his example and support, his team became one of the highest-scoring floors.

Nearly every day, I have multiple patients tell me about how amazing his team is, and I couldn’t agree more. I have seen his team continue to grow and blossom under his leadership. Curtis is the best kind of leader; one whose positive impact goes beyond the staff he oversees. Curtis is a servant leader. He doesn’t just serve his team; he also makes an effort to be present for the entire hospital. He attends and participates in employee events where he serves hospital employees, and he doesn’t stop there. Curtis also sacrifices his time to participate in community education events and service events like the vaccine clinic, which helps our local community.

Curtis is an incredibly responsive leader who is always in his employee’s corner. Although he prioritizes metrics, they are never more important than his employees. Curtis provides clear, transparent, and rapid communication. As soon as information is available to be shared with employees, he brings it out into the open and explains it in a way that we can easily understand. Curtis doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations because he knows that they can often result in positive outcomes. He is honest to a fault, and he offers constructive criticism which is truly helpful. He upholds not only the highest quality standards for his staff but also himself.

Above all, Curtis is a leader who leads by example. He is a perfectionist and gives 110% to the job. He has an impeccable work ethic and can be depended on at a moment’s notice. He is constantly on the floor and available for his team anytime for questions or concerns. With all that he does for the hospital, I hope he knows that his work doesn’t go unnoticed. I am so glad to have a leader like him. Thank you for all that you do Curtis!
