His ability to remain composed under pressure, advocate for the patient’s condition, and complete his responsibilities with integrity left a lasting impression on his team.
Curtis recently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, composure, and patient advocacy in a highly challenging situation. He was assigned to care for a post-operative patient who had sustained a gunshot wound and arrived from the OR following surgical repair.

The patient, a young man recently released from prison, was placed under arrest while still hospitalized after law enforcement discovered he was on parole. On the day of discharge, the patient became verbally aggressive, noncompliant, and refused care. Curtis found himself in the difficult position of preparing the patient for discharge into police custody, a situation that understandably created tension and emotional distress for the patient.

Despite these challenges, Curtis maintained a calm, compassionate demeanor throughout the encounter. He prioritized the patient’s dignity and well-being, even when the patient refused to allow him to change his dressing or remove the wound vac. Recognizing the need for support, Curtis enlisted the help of another RN to assist with the wound vac removal. Through effective teamwork and professionalism, he ensured that the patient received the necessary care prior to discharge.

At no point did Curtis allow the stress of the situation to interfere with his duties or the patient’s care. His ability to remain composed under pressure, advocate for the patient’s condition, and complete his responsibilities with integrity left a lasting impression on his team. This experience was a significant one for Curtis, reflecting both the emotional weight and professional demands of nursing in complex, real-world situations. His conduct exemplified the core values of patient-centered care, professionalism, and resilience.
