I would like to commend Crystal Gates for the exceptional care, leadership, and composure she demonstrates every shift. Crystal is incredibly knowledgeable, quick-thinking, and someone both staff and patients trust. What truly sets her apart is her ability to remain calm and in control during even the most stressful situations.

During a recent tornado warning and an active surge, Crystal kept the entire ER running in a safe and functional manner despite overwhelming circumstances. At one point, we had two critical care patients and a full lobby. She managed patient flow, supported staff, and maintained clear communication without letting the environment feel chaotic. One patient even stated they had no idea how busy the ER was because of how calm everything felt. That speaks directly to Crystal’s leadership and presence.

Crystal consistently reflects Cleveland Clinic’s core values. She puts patients first, ensuring safe and high-quality care even in challenging moments. She demonstrates teamwork by supporting staff and keeping everyone aligned. She leads with integrity and compassion, creating an environment where both patients and caregivers feel respected, supported, and safe. She supports her team, makes thoughtful decisions, and creates a steady, reassuring presence for everyone around her. Crystal is not only an outstanding charge nurse, but she is also genuinely good people and leads with both skill and heart. She truly embodies everything the DAISY Award stands for, and our department is better because of her.
